The Bee Who Brought the Woods Home

Bennett was the only bee in the cedar grove who wore sunglasses.

He also had a magnificent mustache, curled at both ends, which required a surprising amount of attention on windy days.

Every morning, he polished his glasses, straightened his whiskers, and set off in search of something wonderful.

One golden afternoon, Bennett followed a warm, woody scent to a little workshop at the edge of the forest. Inside, a soap maker named Braden stood over a fresh batch of soap.

“Something’s missing,” Braden murmured.

Bennett landed on the windowsill.

“Have you tried honey?”

Braden looked up. He had met plenty of bees, but never one who appeared to be inspecting his work.

“I have cedar,” he said. “And sandalwood. But I’m looking for something to bring them together.”

Bennett lifted his sunglasses.

“I know just the thing.”

He returned with a tiny pot of golden honey, carried between his feet. It took him three trips to bring enough, and after the third he sat on a wooden spoon until his wings stopped trembling.

Braden stirred the honey into the batch. The workshop filled with a scent that reminded him of a cedar chest standing open in a sunny room: rich wood, warm sweetness, and something that made him want to linger.

“That’s it,” he said.

Bennett nodded as though he had expected nothing less.

They poured the soap into long loaf molds. When the loaves were firm, Braden brought out his peculiar cutter, built from old bicycle parts and tightly stretched guitar strings.

Bennett circled it twice.

“Does that make soap or music?”

Braden turned the pedal. The strings hummed softly as they passed through a loaf, leaving a neat row of bars.

“A little of both.”

After the bars had cured, they wrapped each one in a label decorated with cedar greenery, golden honeycomb, and a very large bee wearing sunglasses.

Bennett studied his portrait.

“The mustache could be bigger.”

Braden glanced from the label to the bee.

“If I make it any bigger, there won’t be room for the name.”

Bennett considered this, then carefully smoothed both ends of his mustache.

“Fair enough,” he said. “But save me that bar. I’ve got honey on my feet.”

And that was how Cedar Sandalwood Honey joined the Sweet Peach Menagerie—with a woodland scent, a touch of sweetness, and a bee who stayed to help wrap every bar.
